Description

  • Developing and executing media relations strategies and tactics to elevate the profile of the organization’s meat reduction effort;

  • Identifying and managing media relations opportunities to pitch issues and events to reporters while applying a strong knowledge of farm animal issues and how they can be placed in the media for maximum impact;

  • Researching writing and editing press releases, advisories, letters to the editor, op-eds, pitch letters and other written content for the news media as it relates to FAP issues;

  • Cultivating and maintaining relationships with key media contacts as well as monitoring media coverage to identify new contacts;

  • Representing the organization at events to initiate and develop relationships with reporters and influencers;

  • Routing communications pieces for review internally and incorporating feedback in a timely manner;

  • Posting press releases to the HSUS website and providing media relations coaching to FAP staff as needed;

  • Developing targeted media lists to distributed press documents;

  • Fielding media inquiries, conducting background research on inquiring reporters and routing to appropriate spokesperson to best position the HSUS in the news;

  • Suppling reporters with background information, videoing and scheduling interviews with HSUS spokespeople.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor’s degree in media or public relations, journalism, mass communications, writing or English or equivalent work experience preferred;

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a public or media relations environment preferred;

  • Excellent written and verbal communication;

  • Familiarity with the current media landscape as it relates to food issues;

  • Familiarity with various media directories or public relations computer programs and processes;

  • The ability to build and foster effective relationships by reinforcing trust and respect, and demonstrating high standards of tact, diplomacy and discretion;

  • Ability to travel occasionally for media cultivation and pitching in major markets as well as press conferences or related events;

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook);

  • Attention to detail and commitment to excellence, demonstrated by the delivery of quality and timely outcomes;

  • Strong interpersonal skills are necessary;

  • Strong interest in animal protection issues is preferred.
