Partnership:

A+E Networks and Ancestry

Description:

Ancestry partnered with A+E Networks to examine the impact of Lincoln’s legacy on families of formerly enslaved African Americans.

They created custom ancestry-branded mini-series to celebrate African American stories to complete the history channel’s president’s weekend documentaries “Black Patriots: Heroes of the Civil War” and “Abraham Lincoln” that began Sunday, February 20th, 2022.

Each story featured a relative of formerly enslaved African Americans and revealed unique connections to the legacy of President Abraham Lincoln. Executive Director of the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation in Williamsburg, VA, Christy Coleman, who also contributed to the “Abraham Lincoln” documentary, introduced each story to provide historical context. Through conversations with Professional Genealogist Nicka Sewell-Smith and used the recently added Freedmen’s Bureau records on Ancestry, descendants of formerly enslaved people in the U.S. discover surprising and deeply-moving historical family connections.
