The National Football League and Frito-Lay teamed up to promote SUPER BOWL XLIII with the Crash the Super Bowl Contest. Contestants entered by registering online at http://www.crashthesuperbowl.com and uploading an original 30-second Doritos commercial that they wrote, directed, and produced. Judges determined the 10 finalists based on creativity, originality, and overall appeal. Finalists each received $25,000. America then voted which commercial was the best out of the ten. That commercial ran during SUPER BOWL XLIII. If the commercial rated #1 on the USA Today Ad Meter, the contestant won a $1,000,000 bonus. The contest ran from October 3, 2008 through November 16, 2008. SUPER BOWL XLIII aired on Frebruary 1, 2009.
