20th Century Fox and Apple teamed up to promote AUSTRALIA with a podcast series and contest. The Set to Screen podcast series went behind the scenes of the making of AUSTRALIA by highlighting different aspects of production. The podcasts were available for free from iTunes. Each week a new podcast was released, focusing on location shooting, costume desing, on-set still photography, cinematography, sound recording, music composition, or editing. After each podcast was released, students were given three weeks to submit their work in that area. Two First Prize winners (one high school student and one college student) received a MacBook Pro. Four Second Prize winners (two high school students and two college students) received an iPod Touch. Four Third Prize winners (two high school students and two college students) received an iPod Nano. Four Fourth Prize winners (two high school students and two college students) received an iPod Shuffle. The submission deemed the most creative overall was the Grand Prize winner and won a trip for two to Australia. In addition, the submission that won the editing competition was hand-picked by AUSTRALIA director Baz Luhrmann. Baz planned the winner's trip for two to Australia and took the winner along on the U.S. promotional tour for AUSTRALIA. The winner's editing project was also featured on the DVD release of AUSTRALIA. The contest ended May 26, 2008.
