Nickelodeon partnered with the Black Lives Matter movement to deliver a powerful slate of social justice PSAs and digital content aimed at educating younger audiences on the values of inclusivity, activism, and equality. The initiative underscored Nickelodeon’s commitment to social responsibility and ignited important family conversations across the country.
On June 1, 2020, the children’s network interrupted regular programming for an 8-minute and 46-second moment of reflection, matching the exact amount of time George Floyd was pinned to the ground before his death. During this emotional segment, the screen displayed the words “I can’t breathe” with the sound of labored breathing, creating a stark, unforgettable experience for viewers of all ages.
The break was introduced by a message affirming the network’s values: “Nickelodeon is committed to supporting justice, equality, and human rights.” The PSA was also accompanied by a “Declaration of Kids’ Rights,” a list reinforcing every child’s right to equality, protection, education, and peace.
“Woah. This is powerful. Talk about a conversation starter with children all over America. Well done @Nickelodeon,” wrote one viewer on Twitter, echoing the sentiment of many parents and advocates who praised the network for its courageous stance.
While some questioned whether the content was appropriate for young viewers, others pointed out the privilege in shielding children from conversations Black families cannot avoid. The initiative ultimately opened the door to deeper discussions about systemic racism, accountability, and empathy—starting in the home.
Beyond television, Nickelodeon amplified the campaign on social media and aligned with ViacomCBS’s broader commitment to racial justice, participating in #BlackoutTuesday by pausing all business operations to focus on support for the Black community.
Impact:
Nickelodeon’s PSA and educational content reached millions, reinforcing its position as a media leader willing to stand up for justice—even when it's uncomfortable. By making space for tough but necessary conversations, the network set a new precedent for how children’s media can drive cultural change and support social progress.
